□National Health Insurance Service (NHIS)

A new law in Korea regarding international students and health insurance has been implemented from March 1, 2021. It is now mandatory for all international students to be enrolled in the NHIS.(D2 visa holders/F4 Visa holders) Once you get your ARC(Alien registration Card), you’re automatically subscribed to NHIS. It charges you monthly with the bill to your ARC adress. Insurance fees are subject to change according to the nationality, VISA type and more. Normally you’ll receive the bill around 75,000KRW.(D-2) The Insurance fee is expected to increase next year. NHIS is one of the most inclusive health insurance in Korea. ※EXEMPTION GUIDE

Who can apply for exemption from the NHIS?

- Students who hold private insurance that covers emergency and hospital bills abroad more inclusive than the NHIS coverage and you are staying in Korea for 3 months or less.

 

- Students from France/Japan are eligible for the exemption from NHIS due to provision between governments and insurance policy. You must submit the Application for Exclusion for Health Insurance for Foreigner and Disqualification declaration form.

How can you apply to unsubscribing?

-Fill out the form for Exclusion for Health Insurance for overseas Koreans and foreigners/Disqualification declaration form.

-Visit the center for foreign residents and turn the papers in!

-All documents must be translated to Korean.

 

Why the fee is much more than expected?

-According NHIS policy, The bill of this month shows the next month's fee.

- The very first bill includes not only the next month's fee but also the first month's fee.

- From the second bill, It charges one-month-fee.

※ Please be advised that even if you submit an application for exemption to the NHIS, it may not be approved! You should budget money for having to pay the NHIS premium as a part of your exchange costs just in case!

※Please be aware that you CANNOT apply for this exemption until you have registered with Immigration and have an ARC number.

 

※Re-Enrolling is possible after application of exclusion but It’s not possible to ask the exclusion of Re-enrolling insurance due to Foreign laws.
